Sopwith Camel Instruments

The instrument panel is made from Basswood but as this tends to twist, it has been made from 3 layers, the middle one at right angles to the outer ones. The cut outs are necessary for the guns. They jut out which means that some of the instruments would be too far away from the pilots if directly panel mounted. Therefore it is necessary to build wooden packings as shown for the Air Speed Indicator and the Altimeter. The watch was too valuable to leave so slotted in and out of a little metal holder, which necessitated learning spinning techniques for its manufacture. The compass was surface mounted and stood forward. The magneto switches came directly from the building trade at the time!
